The district of Hamirpur having inherited its name from a descendent of a great Katoch lineage Raja Hamir Chand. Hamirpur District was created mainly as a result of trifurcation of the erstwhile Kangra district on 1 September 1972. The headquarters of the district is in the Hamirpur town which lies on Shimla-Dharamshala road. It is most educated District of Himachal and has highest density of roads amongst all districts of India. This area is situated at lower elevation varies from 400 meters to 1100 meters and comparatively warmer but has some hilly ranges covered with Pine forests. It is well connected by roads from all. Majority of the population here comprise of Hindus. Bulk of the people speak Pahari. . The majority of its population fluently speaks Hindi. Beas river flows through the northern part of and Satluj river flows through the southern part of district Hamirpur.

How To Reach

Air : As there is no Airport in Hamirpur, thus there is no direct Air service / flight to this town. The nearest Airport to Hamirpur is Gaggal (Kangra). Gaggal Airport is approx. 83 Kms far from Hamirpur and frequent bus / Taxi service are available from Hamirpur.

Rail:There is no direct Train service to this town. The nearest railway stations is  Una (Broad Gauge Railway line) and Jawalamukhi Road (Narrow Gauge Railway line). Una  railway staion is approx. 80 Kms far from it and frequent bus / Taxi  service is available from Una.

Road: It is approachable by road from all the major cities / towns of neighboring States and Districts.

Tourist Attraction

Sujanpur Tira

It was founded by Raja Abhay Chand, the king of ruling Katoch dynasty of Kangra in 1748 A.D. There is a tomb of Nawab Gulam Mohammed of Rampur. There are five old temples at Tira and Sujanpur.


In Princely days, it is used to be the headquarters of the Nadaun Jagir, Maharaja Sansar Chand of Kangra used to hold his court during summer for a number of year during his reign. Nadaun is also Known for Blikleshwar Mahadev temple which is said to be have been founded by the Pandavs.

Deotsidh Temple

It is situated on the border of Bilaspur (70 Kms), Hamirpur (30 Kms) and is well connected by roads from all sides. During Navratras, there is a continuous stream of visitors to receive blessings of the Babaji.


It is situated in district Hamirpur, 6 KM far from Dera parol around the bank of Kunah Khad is the location associated with Markandya Rishi. Based on Puranas, it’s there that the idol of Rishi Markandya was set up. A Natural water spring is also located there. The fair of markanda is also famous.


It is located on Dharamshala-Shimla road at a distance of 15 KMs. from Hamirpur towards Bilaspur. The place is famous for Radha Swami Satsang and one of the largest charitable hospital of the state have been constructed by the same religious trust.

Govt. Polytechnic – Hamirpur was established in 1963 to impart technical training leading to diploma level certificate. Initially, three diploma courses viz. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, were offered by the polytechnic. Subsequently, Diploma in Computer Engineering and Diploma in Information Technology were introduced in 2000 and 2001 respectively.
