Anjuna Beach in Goa

Anjuna Beach GoaAnjuna is a small village in north Goa, on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Anjuna beach is one of the most popular beaches in Goa situated 8 km west of Mapusa and 18 km from the capital Panaji. It was a famous destination for hippies during the sixties and seventies. It is in the late 1950s to mid-1960s that Anjuna beach was “discovered” by the hippies.

The sea at Anjuna is particularly safe for bathing, while the soft white sands are great for sun bathing, a favourite activity of the sun-starved European tourists. At the north of Anjuna, is its famous flea market, where everything from Kashmiri handicrafts, to Gujarati and Rajasthani clothes, bags and jewellery is available in plenty. Anjuna is also known for its full-moon (acid house) parties. Held for and by young tourists, these parties have attracted thousands of tourists. The trance party with dance, frolic, and merriment goes all night besides the fire. The main attractions of Anjuna Beach are the magnificent Albuquerque Mansion built in 1920 (flanked by octagonal towers and an attractive Mangalore tile-roof), the Mascarenhas Mansion, and the Chapora Fort.

Visiting Time
The tourist season in Anjuna starts in early November, when most of the long staying regulars show up. During the Christmas and New Year rush, the village and beach site is busy with a mixed crowd of round the world backpackers and tourists from all over India, attracted by the promise of the big beach parties.

Eating Out Places At Anjuna
Both the beachfront and village at Anjuna are flooded with good places to eat and drink. All serve cold beer, invariably with thumping techno music in the background. On the beach, tourists can buy fresh fruits, including watermelons, pineapples and locally grown coconuts from the local vendors.

Anjuna Beach – Transportation
The nearest airport is at Dabolim, which is 29 km away from Panaji and 47 km from Anjuna. The nearest railway station is at Karmali 11 km away from Panaji and 29 km from Anjuna. There are buses every hour to Anjuna from Mapusa (8 km). There are frequent local buses to Panaji, which is just 18 km away. One can also hire a motorcycle or a taxi from Mapusa to reach Anjuna.

Places To Stay
There are plenty of guesthouses around the village. Most of them consists of small-unfurnished houses. Some of the resorts and guesthouse can be found at the main Starco’s crossroads area. But the best choice for accommodation is available in Calangute, Baga or nearby Vagator or Chapora.

Location and Climate
Goa has a consistent climate throughout the year with just meager fluctuations in the temperature. The temperature during the summers ranges from 24°C to 32.7°C and during the winters it ranges from 21.3°C to 32.2°C. Because of its pleasant climate, Anjuna beach can be visited at any time of the year. However, tourists should beware the heavy rainfall between June and October. The period from November to February is the best time to visit Anjuna.
